Many outside obstacles affect intimacy in our marriages. As military couples, the physical separation of deployment and even the reintegration after a military separation are often changes that affect our ability to communicate and maintain intimacy. This is especially true when one or both spouses are active-duty military where they encounter high stress situations that may put them in harm’s way. Carrying the burden of stress from these roles often cause us to build up walls, to protect our spouse. While this protection is well intended, it can cause a breakdown in communication and loss of intimacy, in the relationship.
